5 must pack items: beach break

With the gorgeous weather we’re experiencing in Europe right now, I’m pretty sure everyone is either at the beach or wishing they were! To help you get prepared (or enable your day-dreaming), here are my top 5 essential items to pack for a beach break.

1. After-sun care: As an Australian, I’ve been constantly taught about the importance of sun protection. I always wear SPF 50+ when I’m at the beach, but even with that, my oh-so-pale skin can feel a bit tender after a day outside. I’m a huge fan of Clarins After Sun Care range because it’s intensely moisturising to help prolong your tan, but it’s also cooling to provide relief in case you slip up and get burnt.

2. One-piece swimsuit: Don’t get me wrong, I’ve nothing against bikinis, but the humble one-piece can make a stylish alternative. I wore the Jets by Jessika Allen iconic printed bandeau swimsuit (pictured) this summer and I must say I felt like a gorgeous pin-up girl! Unfortunately this design is now sold out online but you can find equally pin-up worthy styles here, here and here.

3. Maxi Dress: A maxi dress with clean lines will be the MVP in your beach break suitcase. You can throw it on at the beach over your swimsuit and then you can dress it up with some jewelry or a great belt in the evening for dinner. I think Anthropologie’s Seared Colorblock Dress ($98) would be an on-trend multi-tasker.

4. Large scarf: A scarf that matches your maxi dress and/or swimsuit is a must-pack accessory. You can wrap it around your hips at the beach, throw it over your shoulders in the evening when those sea breezes cool it down, and even make it into a pillow when you lie back to read your book. I’ve picked Modcloth’s Gossamer Gyrose scarf in coral ($24.99)

5. Neutral flat sandals: You can’t go wrong with these shoes. They’ll work their way effortlessly from day to night and they’ll keep a little bit of summer working in your wardrobe once you’re back in the big smoke. I love Kate Spade’s Faylyn thong sandal (now $149.99)

friday film: brisbane is back in business

January 21, 2011 in travel

It’s a week since the flood waters receded here in Brisbane and life is returning to normal – even my friends whose West End apartment was full of sludge this time last week are moving back home tomorrow!

In support of our local tourism industry, today’s Friday film is made by Ben Southall (AKA he of “the best job in the world” fame and Queensland Tourism Ambassador) that shows first had that our local attractions are back and open for business.

So come visit – we’re ready to welcome you!

(Note: In the interests of full disclosure, I do work for Tourism Queensland).

gift idea #22: the globetrotter

December 22, 2010 in entertainment, travel

You’ve just discovered that your cousin who has been backpacking his way around the world is now going to be home for Christmas. You haven’t bought him anything yet and it’s too late to guarantee online deliveries will make it. So what do you get him?

I think Transit Maps of the World would be the perfect present for any unexpected (or expected) globetrotter this Christmas.

It contains the maps of every rapid-transit system in the world including graphics, diagrams, photographs and historical data. With it in their pack, the lucky recipient will be set no matter what city they wake up in!

It’s available in Borders here in Australia for $49.95, from Anthropologie in the US for $25 or quite possibly from your local bookstore (give them a call).

gift idea #5: frequent flyer

December 5, 2010 in travel

Airlines seem to be getting stricter and stricter about the amount of luggage we can take on flights and the fines for going over the allowed limit are insane.

If you know a frequent flyer, you can save her the pain of unexpectedly paying for excess baggage by slipping this cute luggage scale under her Christmas tree.

The scales weigh up to 100lb (50kg) and the backlit display on the top changes from blue to red when the bag is overweight. The hook and handles tuck away to keep it neat while travelling.

You can pick one up from Flight 001 for $28.

gift idea #2: scratch off map

December 2, 2010 in travel

Most of my friends, like me, are serious travel bugs. We all seem to have an incurable bout of wanderlust and a desire to see every possible part of the world.

So what’s the perfect present for a wandering soul? Today I’ve got an idea.

This scratch off wall map is a novel way to keep track of the countries you’ve visited. Once you’ve travelled somewhere, just scratch off the gold to reveal the colour underneath. Best of all, it rolls up so you can stash it in your suitcase!

This online exclusive is available for $28 from Urban Outfitters.
