(almost) at the movies: pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides

July 30, 2010 in movies by Lauren

I can freely admit that the primary reason I was a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean was because of Captain Jack Sparrow, played brilliantly by the very-easy-on-the-eye Johnny Depp.

The fourth movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is currently filming and while Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom won’t be making an appearance, Johnny and Geoffrey Rush will be joined by Penélope Cruz and Gemma Ward.

The below teaser was prepared for Comic-Con and features the Jack Sparrow we all know and love – enjoy!

best dressed at mad men premiere

July 29, 2010 in fashion by Lauren

Welcome back, Mad Men! It’s so nice to see you back on our screens in all your dysfunctional glory.

It was also great fun to see your stylish leading ladies hitting the red carpet for the Season 4 premiere in New York over the weekend. Both Elisabeth Moss and Grace Kelly – I mean January Jones – left their 60s costumes in the wardrobe, drawing inspiration instead from the roaring 20s.

Tight though the competition is between the two, I’m giving my best dressed to Mrs Draper’s alter ego. The draped beading and modern take on a flapper gown is elegant and occasion appropriate. I also like that she went almost accessory-free (with just a small silver stud in each ear) and let the dress speak for itself. See more at PopSugar.

Once you’re finished looking a photos, check out this cool cut of every cigarette smoked in Mad Men – as Jezebel says, smoking is not cool. Unless you’re Don Draper. Watch it here.

(almost) at the movies: black swan

July 28, 2010 in movies by Lauren

Black Swan has been in the works for a long time – the Darren Aronfsky thriller will open the Venice Film Festival on 1 September, a decade after Aronfsky started talks with Natalie Portman about her role.

From Fox Searchlight:

Nina (Portman) is a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side – a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

Portman studied ballet until she was 13, making her a perfect fit for this role. Good thing too because she met her real-life ballet dancer boyfriend Benjamin Millepied during filming. Mind you, he may get a little jealous by the sexy on-screen between Portman and Kunis, which is rumoured to be overtly erotic.

Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte designed 40 different costumes for their first foray into film costuming. The first photos were released this week and show off their incredible work – the one included here is of Portman in her Black Swan costume.

No word yet on when we can expect to see it on the big screen here but I know I’ll first in line!

design your dream trench

July 27, 2010 in fashion by Lauren

You’ve always dreamt of being a fashion designer, haven’t you? I know, I’ve seen your dreams and so has French label Comptoir des Cotonniers (okay, maybe I’m taking my Inception obsession a little far now but you get the gist…)

In honour of their fifteenth anniversary, Comptoir invites you to redesign their famously feminine trench.

According to the company’s website, “imagination is key to this competition focused on creativity and originality takes centre stage, giving women the chance to freely express their personality!”

A jury made up of fashion journalists and designers will choose the winning trench, with the designer set to receive a gift voucher worth 1000€ or equivalent to spend in their Comptoir des Cotonniers store.

Download the rules and entry form here then go get creative. You have until 6 September to get your entry in.

at the movies: inception

July 26, 2010 in movies by Lauren

I quite enjoy going to a movie without having any idea what it’s going to be about but it so rarely happens, even with advanced screenings. Usually trailers give the plot away or early reviews let you know what you’re in for.

Despite having a few big name actors (Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard and Ellen Page) and a hot director (Christopher Nolan of The Dark Knight fame), relatively little was known about Inception before its release. I guess my copy of the cryptic marketing was lost in the post (so check it out at Wired instead).

The movie itself was amazing. I really enjoyed both the execution of the film and the premise behind it (spoiler alert: that premise being that you can steal information from someone by accessing their subconscious while they dream).

I don’t want to ruin it for you so all I’ll say is this – if you liked The Matrix and/or Vanilla Sky, you need to see this movie. In fact, even if you didn’t, I recommend you see it. Hours after leaving the cinema, I’m still thinking about it.

In a nutshell, it’s the best film I’ve seen this year.
