cyber monday sales!

November 30, 2010 in fashion by Lauren

It’s the Monday after Thanksgiving in the US so that means… (drum roll please)… it’s Cyber Monday!

The online equivalent of the Black Friday sales (which, in turn, are the US equivalent of Australia’s Boxing Day sales) is the international shopaholic’s opportunity to partake in cut-price madness without the in-person cut-throat competition.

Best of all, we can stock up on cheap pressies now rather than waiting until the day after Christmas to hit the sales – those sneaky Yanks!

Chloe is my guru for all things sale related, so make sure you check out her list of what’s hot before you pull out your credit card.

Personally, I’m hoping for some additional markdowns at Anthropologie later tonight and will be checking out Modcloth for 25% off presents.

Some other sales to check out today only:
Benefit Cosmetics – 20% off best sellers and free international shipping on any $85 order (code: DEALDAY1)
Nanette Lepore – 20% off on all orders (code: CYBER10)
Tracy Reese – 20% off on all full-priced items (code: CYBER)
Banana Republic – 15% off and free domestic shipping (code: CYBER15)

Happy shopping – and feel free to share any great deals or finds in the comments!

lusting for: 12 days of dresses

November 29, 2010 in fashion by Lauren

I had my first Christmas party on Friday night (yes, I know it’s not even December yet) and I was so excited to win best dressed – my work is full of super stylish girls so it was a real honour!

Now I’m turning my attention to Work Party #2, which has the theme of “shine” (because Queensland is where Australia shines, remember?)

Fortunately Urban Outfitters has released an entire range of appropriately shiny party dresses just in time to save me from succumbing to death by sequins. Each of the 12 Days of Dresses correlates with one of the items from the 12 Days of Christmas Song (Partridge Dress, Milkmaid Dress, etc).

Being the little drummer girl I am, I can’t go past the Drummer Dress (right). At $89, it could easily find a spot within my wardrobe.

Which one is your favourite?

friday film: it gets better, love pixar

November 26, 2010 in movies by Lauren

In September, author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry to tell young people facing harassment, in particular LGBT kids, that it does indeed get better.

Two months later, the It Gets Better Project has turned into a worldwide movement, inspiring over 5000 user-created videos and over 15 million views. The project has received submissions from celebrities, organisations, activists, politicians and media personalities, including President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Anne Hathaway, Colin Farrell, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Ellen DeGeneres, the staffs of The Gap, Google and Facebook, and many more.

Now Pixar has made their own video of hope. I always cry in Pixar films (you should’ve seen me after Toy Story 3 – actually, it’s a good thing you didn’t!) and this one is no different.

Even as a straight teenager, I found high school to be pretty tough and thinking back on it now, I can assure anyone reading this that it’s true – it really does get better.

Tissues at the ready…

lanvin for h&m charity auction

November 25, 2010 in fashion by Lauren

There was madness in H&M stores around the world earlier this week when the Lanvin for H&M range was launched. There were even reports of a stabbing in a NYC queue, though these were later proved false – turns out the only victims were of the fashion variety.

If you’re not Lanvin-ed out, you might like to check out the charity auction related to the launch. Alber Elbaz customised looks from the H&M range to create one-off haute couture pieces for the auction and there are also original, signed sketches by Elbaz available for you to bid on.

Each piece is sponsored by a fashion blog and all proceeds will go to the H&M UNICEF All the Children project. If this blog was to sponsor a piece, it would be the fabulous sketch pictured to the right (which is actually sponsored by El Fashionista). Bidding currently stands at $1400.

All bids close at 11:59 PM CET on Friday. With prices for the dresses comparable to those listed on eBay for store-bought pieces, I know I’d feel much better about sending money to support children’s rights than lining the pockets of a greedy seller.

save the date, buy the dress

November 24, 2010 in fashion, news by Lauren

Wills and Kate have announced that they will be getting married on April 29 next year at Westminster Abbey.

As a result, British readers can look forward to a four-day weekend to celebrate the royal nuptials, with the wedding day on Friday to be a public holiday and the following Monday a Bank Holiday.

While the Abbey accommodates 2000 people, the happy couple are apparently keen to have a public street party outside so that even more people can share their joy. It would be great to join the festivities but what to wear?

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, you could always wear the same Issa dress Miss Middleton wore to announce her engagement (right). According to Harper’s Bazaar, will be taking orders for the dress from today.

Of course, there are high street designs appearing left, right and centre including a £16 version from Tesco. If you want your own rip off, go to OSOYOU for inspiration from a range of designers.
