in the news: much love me

May 31, 2011 in fashion by Lauren

Anthropologie’s Rockerfeller Centre has hosted some great artists in the past and it looks like they plan to keep the trend going with South African artist Ruan Hoffmann.

While he trained as a painter, Hoffman now works with ceramics and 100 of his designs will be shown in Anthro’s gallery.

Personally I think they’re gorgeous and I love the abstract designs – check out a sample on the right.

The exhibition will open tomorrow night and you can pay it a visit until 28 July (and if you do make it along, let me know what you think!)

PS Also on the topic of Anthro, free shipping is back for US customers – head over to Effortless Anthropologie for the scoop.

(almost) at the movies: the girl with the dragon tattoo

May 30, 2011 in movies by Lauren

It always annoys me when a well-made film (or TV show) is remade for an American audience and as far as I’m concerned, the English version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is just that (though I know there are plenty of folks who will disagree with me).

The first trailer for the upcoming film was released here in France and also in Sweden last Wednesday before showing select US theaters over the weekend.

The trailer suggests it will be “the feel bad movie of Christmas” and it will be interesting to see how this adaptation goes (though I must admit I’m a little biased in favour of any film starring Daniel Craig…)

Excuse the screener below but the official trailer isn’t yet available online. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will be released in the US on 21 December 2011 and the UK on 26 December 2011 (with Australia almost certainly getting a Boxing Day release as well).

Update 2 June: The screener video has been taken down so I’ve replaced it with the official version. Apologies for any inconvenience.

at the movies: pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides

May 27, 2011 in movies by Lauren

I was always a big fan of the Pirates films but when I heard they were making a fourth film without Orlando or Keira, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Like most of us, I’m a big Jack Sparrow fan so I figured it was worth the risk.

On Stranger Tides joins Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in London, where he crosses paths with former lover, Angelica (Penelope Cruz). After she forces him to join the crew of fabled pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack discovers he’s part of their plan to find the fountain of youth. But they’ll have to beat both the Spaniards and the English, who are being led by none other than Captain Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush).

I won’t lie – the film was a bit disappointing. I went in with fairly low expectations so I still enjoyed it but the boy (who hoped it would be as good as the previous films) hated it. Something was definitely missing this time around and I’m pretty sure it was more than just the two former leads.

If you decide to see it, make sure you stick around until the end of the credits – in usual Pirates tradition, there’s an extra scene as a treat for waiting.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is in cinemas everywhere.

Rating: **1/2

lusting for: gathering breeze dress

May 26, 2011 in fashion by Lauren

In approximately six weeks, I plan to be in Italy with the boy and some friends for our summer holidays.

I’m really looking forward to our trip but the side-effect is that every time I look at an item of clothing, I think “could I wear that on my holidays?”

One dress that I could immediately imagine myself wearing as soon as I saw it was the Gathering Breeze Dress, which just popped up on Anthropologie’s website this week.

I’m a big fan of the cream lace top combined with the green jersey skirt and it looks to me like one of those items you could really dress up or down depending on the occasion.

The Gathering Breeze Dress costs $258 from Anthropologie.

Are there any items you’re lusting for ahead of your summer break?

(almost) at the movies: the muppets

May 25, 2011 in movies by Lauren

Do you remember in Forgetting Sarah Marshall when Jason Segal’s character wrote that puppet musical? Well, it turns out the actor actually wrote that himself and the experience gave him the confidence to pitch the idea of a Muppets movie.

Aside from Segal and Amy Adams (who star in the trailer), some other big names rumoured to be involved in the project include Zach Galifianakis, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Jack Black, Ricky Gervais, Katy Perry and Segal’s How I Met Your Mother co-star Neil Patrick Harris.

Check the first teaser trailer below and let me know what you think! The Muppets is scheduled for release in the US on 23 November 2011, in Australia on 1 January 2012 and in the UK on 17 February 2012.
