(almost) at the movies: salmon fishing in the yemen

February 29, 2012 in movies by Lauren

After the excitement of the Oscars, let’s look at the films coming up for the next year.

One that I quite like the look of is Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, starring Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor and Kristin Scott Thomas.

The film received positive reviews at its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and, from the trailer, it looks like a smart yet soul-warming offering.

Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts.

best dressed at the 2012 oscars

February 27, 2012 in fashion by Lauren

Film’s night of nights is over and while the show is being touted as “the most boring ever”, I’m happy that the fashion was less than dull. Time to review the trends!

White: I love the look of a white gown on the red carpet and apparently the stylists agree with me because this was the biggest trend last night. Some of my particular favourites included Milla Jovovich in sparkling Elie Saab, Gwyneth Paltrow in sleek Tom Ford (with a cape!), Shailene Woodley in vintage-inspired Valentino and best supporting actress Octavia Spencer in glamourous Tadashi Shoji.

Red: It wasn’t a big trend but three of my favourite red carpet stars were wearing it – Emma Stone‘s Giambattista Valli gown was gorgeous with a giant neck bow, while Natalie Portman was sweet and classic in a vintage Christian Dior haute couture gown from 1954 and Michelle Williams looked elegant in her peplum-detailed Louis Vuitton.

Gold: At the risk of being confused with the coveted statuette, some leading ladies opted for draped gold this year. Best Actress Meryl Streep wore hers by Lanvin, Clooney’s squeeze Stacy Keibler opted for Marchesa and my favourite diva, Miss Piggy, went for Zac Posen.

Best of the rest: Glenn Close looked amazing in petrol Zac Posen, Viola Davis rocked her natural hair as well as her jewel green Vera Wang gown, Berenice Bejo was ladylike in mint Elie Saab, Jessica Chastain looked a true Hollywood star in black and gold Alexander McQueen and, of course, Angelina Jolie (and her leg) stole the show in black velvet Versace.

Runners-up for me were last year’s best dressed Natalie Portman in her vintage Dior and fresh face Jessica Chastain in her fabulous McQueen. However it was Ms Paltrow who made my jaw drop – her look is so simple but so stunning. And did I mention she wore a cape? What’s not to love!

Who was your best dressed?

friday film: fotoshop by adobé

February 24, 2012 in beauty, entertainment by Lauren

Here’s a film to give you a giggle on your Friday.

Jesse Rosten made the below faux-vertisment after stumbling upon an infomercial for a beauty product one sleepless night. Rosten said the commercial showed before and after portraits that looked to him like the same photo had been photoshopped to achieve the desired results.

That planted the idea for the Fotoshop by Adobé advertisement. Keep an eye out for some of the most controversial recent Photoshop incidents and have a wonderful weekend!

in the news: the entire marni x h&m collection

February 20, 2012 in fashion by Lauren

H&M have released images of the full Marni for H&M collection and it’s all truly gorgeous!

Leah Chernikoff from Fashionista attended the launch party on Friday night and she’s said that everything is of such good quality, it looks and feels like real Marni. If that’s the case, I can’t wait to get my mitts all over it!

My favourite pieces from the lookbook include the Dotty sundress (right – 79.95EUR), the peacock-inspired circle skirt (79.95EUR) and the flower necklaces (29.95EUR).

Check out the whole lookbook from H&M and let me know – what are you most excited about?

friday film: the woman dress

February 17, 2012 in fashion by Lauren

Today’s film gives me the icks but I want to get your opinions on it. It’s latest campaign from Miu Miu and shows three witches making a dress… out of a woman.

The film introduces the pentagonal Culte sunglasses ($390) but truth be told, this does not make me want to buy them. At all.

Watch the clip (perhaps wait until the morning – it’s a bit creepy!) and let me know… does it make you want to buy sunglasses or does it just leave you wanting to rock in the corner?
