fashion inspiration: the great gatsby

July 22, 2012 in fashion by Lauren

It’s still another five months before the film hits our screens, but designers are already taking inspiration from Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby (noteably Gucci and Alberta Feretti).

This is going to be a big look for fall so here are some ideas on how to jazz-age up your wardrobe.

Dresses: The 20s are all about the dresses. Channel the era into your day wardrobe by adopting a dropped waist. Be warned, this look works best on those of us with less curves.

The Rauma Drop-Waist Dress from Anthropologie ($158) has a shorter length to keep you looking modern.

The Violet Lights Sequin Collar Dress from Ruche ($39.99) has a dash of modern sparkle from its gleaming collar.

Floaty layers: Another daytime look is the floaty layers, as demonstrated below by Carey Mulligan.

Get the look with the Rise embellished cape dress from Dorothy Perkins (currently £45.00)

Alternatively, throw a cape like Modcloth’s Photographic Flashback Cape ($57.99) over a simple white frock.

Heavy beading: If you want evening style like Daisy Buchanan, your evening gowns should be embellished with heavy beading.

Go all out, but in an edgy shorter length, wearing this Lipsy VIP Bandeau Embellished Dress from ASOS ($198.84).

Sequins have just as much impact but can help keep your dress from weighing more than you do. Try French Connection’s Peal Queen Strappy Dress (on sale for £99.00 in the UK store or $199.99 in the US store)

Alternatively, a sequinned art-deco pattern coupled with a straight style dress gives a fabulously modern take on the look. This Warehouse 1920s dress with fluro sequins ($165.70) is divine.

Neck details: If all over beading is too much for you to bear, try going for embellishment just around the neck.

The Cage Embellished Bodycon Dress from Topshop ($118) is a modern take on the dress above.

A word on accessories: While jazz-age accessories are divine (like Daisy’s headband below), avoid over-doing your look by pairing these extras with the dresses above. You don’t want to look like you’re an escaped extra from the set! Keep make-up fresh and hair modern too (no pin curls unless you’re going to a fancy-dress party).

Now go get your Charleston on, you fabulous thing!

lusting for: crayola nail polish

July 19, 2012 in fashion by Lauren

I loved Crayola crayons as a kid, with all those beautiful colours and endless possibilities. Now, that little piece of childhood is available for us to enjoy as adults!

Crayola has released a mini nail polish set and it’s incredibly cute, with perfect colours for summer. Some polishes are glittery, some are metallic and the others are solids. My personal favourites are the robin’s egg blue and plum.

Preorder your set from Fred Flare for $12.

in the news: miss wu by jason wu

July 18, 2012 in fashion, news by Lauren

After the success of Jason Wu’s collection for Target earlier this year, the designer has decided to launch a contemporary line called Miss Wu.

The ready-to-wear collection will be created in collaboration with US department store Nordstrom, which has a one-year exclusive on the new brand for the first year. A global launch is expected after the exclusive ends.

“Instead of just doing ‘Jason Wu-for-less,’ the idea is to explore the other side of myself,” Wu told WWD. “I always see Jason Wu as my aesthetic, my design sensibility. Miss Wu is my personality. It was really fun to explore that facet of who I am – slightly more downtown, and with a more relaxed attitude.”

The 40-piece Mod-inspired collection will be available in Nordstrom from January, with prices starting at $195.

What do you think about the new Miss Wu line?

(almost) at the movies: oz the great and powerful

July 16, 2012 in movies by Lauren

My fairytale moment continues! First, we had a peek at Angelina Jolie in costume as Maleficent, then Christian Louboutin released his interpretation of Cinderella’s glass slipper. Today, we have the trailer for the upcoming prequel to the Wizard of Oz.

Oz: The Great and Powerful is the story of behind the Wizard (James Franco). It’s a slightly different take to the musical, Wicked, but it looks like it will be just as amazing. What do you think?

The film is due to be released in Australia on 7 March 2013, and in the US and the UK on 8 March 2013.

lusting for: louboutin’s glass slipper

July 10, 2012 in fashion by Lauren

I’ve been having a bit of a Cinderella moment lately. No, I haven’t been dropping shoes all over town, but I have just finished reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer (an intriguing summer read, if you’re looking for one) and now Christian Louboutin has unveiled his long awaited interpretation of the famous glass slipper.

The release of the design (right) is in celebration of the re-launch of Disney’s Cinderella on Blu-ray and DVD.

The slippers themselves features heels covered in crystals, shimmering butterfly embellishments, and (of course) Louboutin’s signature red soles.

While the shoe itself will not be available in Louboutin stores, 20 pairs will be given away as part of a worldwide giveaway. For your chance to be a princess, keep your eyes open on 17 August, when Louboutin and Walt Disney will release details of the giveaway (Prince Charming not included).
