beauty spot: battling winter skin

Winter is definitely here now in Australia and the combination of dry heating and the start of a head cold has sent my face into a bit of a freak out. I also periodically suffer from eczema around my eyes and it has decided to reappear to mark the start of winter too.

Through much trial and error, I’ve found a few miracle products that save my face from falling off.

First I strip out all of my usual serums and treatments – no acids, no Vitamin C, no retinol, no clay masks, basically nothing that could further aggravate my sensitised skin.

Then I turn back to my old French pharmacy favourites. I just find them the best for effectively soothing and nourishing my dry skin without making me break out. Avène’s Extremely Gentle Cleanser Lotion is (as the name suggests) extremely gentle and doesn’t sting or leave my face feeling tight, even when I’m having an eczema flare up. It’s not very effective at removing make-up but when my skin is sad, I tend to not wear much more than a tinted moisturiser anyway. I follow up with the Avène Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum – I haven’t been able to find this one in Australia yet but I’ve had it on my shelf since it launched in the UK last year.

For my dry eye area, I either use the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Eye Contour Cream in the day or Kiehl’s Creamy Under Eye Treatment with Avocado at night.

And finally, for the all important moisture, I use Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentre in the day or the MV Organics Daily Soother Booster at night. If I’m super dry, I’ll also slap on some Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask. And, as always, I’ll pop some By Terry Baume de Rose on my lips and cuticles before bed (nothing like a bit of luxury before you drift off!)

I’l keep up this routine until at least a week after my eczema has disappeared and it generally works pretty well for me. But I’m curious – what products do you use to save face in winter?
