at the movies: the runaways
It’s been a while since I last posted a movie review but last night the boy and I went along to a Triple J preview screening of The Runaways. I was hoping it would be a good rock biopic and, for once, it was.
The plot centres around Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, two outcasts who join up to form The Runaways – the groundbreaking all-girl rock band from the 1970s. The storyline is actually taken from Currie’s book, Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway and covers the formation of the band and its rise to success. It’s full of all the sex, drugs and rock n roll you could hope for meaning this movie’s MA 15+ rating is probably warranted.
Dakota Fanning really shakes off her past as a child actor in her role as the jailbait lead singer Cherie Currie and despite really disliking Kristen Stewart in Twilight, I thought she was amazing as Joan Jett. Both actresses also actually sing in the film, which is pretty cool and surprisingly good.
The Runaways would be a great film for a fun girls’ night out, though the guys will enjoy it too (at least mine did!)
