After viewing some of the Avenue Q songs on YouTube a while back, I had really been looking forward to seeing the show on the stage. It was particularly exciting that I didn’t even have to travel to see it, with the Australian touring cast turning up here in Brisbane.
In a word, this musical is hilarious. Of course, for some people the word of choice might be “offensive” so if you have issues with coarse language and puppet-sex, I’d advise against this one. However if you don’t mind a bit of a send-up of political correctness, you should definitely splash out on a ticket.
The story is set in New York City on Avenue Q, where puppets and humans live side by side. It’s basically a grown-up version of Sesame Street and while it’s the traditional musical plot of boy meets girl, musical numbers like “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist”, “If You Were Gay” and “It Sucks to be Me” keep it fresh and will have you giggling in your seat.
All in all, it’s a fabulously fun and naughty night out.
