eating out: mecca bah

Mecca Bah is one of those restaurants I’d wanted to try for ages so when it was up to me to choose a place for dinner with the girls, it was top of mind.

According to its website, Mecca Bah provides a modern interpretation of Moroccan and Middle Eastern cuisine in a spectacular setting that will whisk you away to another world. It sits in the centre of the Emporium complex and I must say the aromas spilling out onto the footpath make you wonder what mouthwatering treats are being prepared.

To help us settle into the Middle Eastern surrounds, we kicked off our evening with a shared platter of Turkish bread and dips (Hummus, Labna and Baba Gannouj) and some cocktails – I can recommend the Lychee Zing Martini and the Lemon Meringue.

I had trouble selecting what to have from the mains because I love a good tagine, though on this occasion the spit roasted lamb Turkish pizza (with rocket, yoghurt & sumac) was too good to pass up. I could’ve easily shared my pizza (possibly with the addition of a salad) as I only managed to make it through a little over half. My friend who ordered the spiced chicken pizza (with eggplant, rocket & tahini sauce) made it through even less! Our third musketeer fared a little better with her lamb meatballs tagine (with egg and spicy tomato sauce) served with couscous.

While the desserts looked appetizing, we were all too full from our mains to squeeze anything in. Instead, we settled for coffees and mint tea.

I thought the food was tasty and fairly priced – our meals and cocktails came to about $45 each. The atmosphere was pleasant, even mid-week, and I would be keen to go back again to try one of those tagines.
