Today the world lost a star so bright and full of life that it’s hard to believe. And while on the outside, Robin Williams was brimming with humour and warmth, we learn today that inside he may have been losing a battle.
That’s right, Mrs Beckham has selected over 600 pieces from her personal wardrobe to auction on 20-25 August, including hats, shoes, bags, jewelry, designer ready-to-wear, costume pieces, coats, skiwear and evening dresses. (Let’s take a moment to contemplate the fact that she has 600 items to sell – I have serious wardrobe envy!) The designers of the items read like a veritable who’s who of the fashion world: Roberto Cavalli, Alexander McQueen, Roland Mouret… the list goes on!
But let’s not forget this is for charity, and such a worthy one at that. The funds raised will help mothers2mothers’ Mentor Mothers reach even more HIV-positive mothers with critical health education and support, to stay healthy and protect their babies from HIV infection.
You need to register if you want the chance to take part in the auction. Watch the video below to learn more.
Fashion: I hit the sales hard this month but my favourite purchase is actually something I bought full-price (quelle horreur!) I am completely smitten with Anthropologie’s Tenaya Jumpsuit (1). It’s so cute and comfortable, perfect with flat sandals during the day or with heels for dinner. This one is going to be in high rotation over the summer!
Face: I may have gone a little overboard on beauty products while I was in New York and Paris this month (in truth, I could probably set up my own mini Sephora now) but my number one purchase has to be the GlamGlow YouthMud Mask (2). I know I’m incredibly late to the party on this and the entire rest of the blogosphere has already put it into the category of cult favourite – but there’s a reason! It exfoliates, tightens the skin and makes pores completely invisible. Your boyfriend might complain that you look like a swamp monster for 20 minutes (or at least mine does) but it’s worth it!
Food: You wouldn’t think I’d go hunting for Australians when I was on holidays in the US, but somehow it always seems to happen. Why, you ask? I need good coffee! Fortunately the team at Bluestone Lane Coffee (3) know their brew AND have three locations in Manhattan. Give them a go – although I take no responsibility if you can never face a cup of drip again!
Film: Yes, I was one of the people who Kickstarted Zac Braff’s new film, Wish I Was Here (4). Make my investment worthwhile and go see it!
Flashback: As I’ve kicked back into blogging more frequently again, I’ve enjoyed re-reading this post from 2010 about whether a person can be intelligent and still like fashion (5).
Confession time: I’ve never been one for working out. But last year, I was involved in a nasty crash on the slopes that saw me blow out my knee. In the months of recovery that followed, I found that one of the best things for both relieving the pain AND rebuilding my strength was… ballet!
I danced all throughout my childhood and teenage years so it seemed a natural fit that I should come back to it. But the biggest problem I encountered was the lack of adult classes available in Switzerland. I was about to resign myself to plié-ing alone when I discovered Sleek Technique.
The brainchild of dancers Flick Swan and Victoria Marr, Sleek Technique offers a range of pre-recorded ballet workouts as well as live classes that you can join from the comfort of your own home.
The workouts are short enough that you have no excuse for not squeezing in at least one day, and often I’ll combine one of the pre-recorded toning workouts with one of the cardio ones (the times for live classes were previously not amazing for me but now that they’ve added some extra offerings, I’ll have to get onto those too!)
This is the only exercise I’ve ever stuck with so something is obviously working! If you’re into dance, I’d recommend you give Sleek Technique a go!
Anthropologie’s Mayacamas Maxi Dress was sold out in my size in every store in town and because I was only there for a few days, there wasn’t time to order one in for me. Fortunately I’ve noticed it’s still available online so hopefully we will be united very soon!
This is one of those items that didn’t grab me on the website but it is absolutely divine in person. The colours are stunning, and the style and beaded neckline mean that it can be smart casual for the day and then dialed up for the evening.
If you also want to make Mayacamas acquaintance, you should be aware that the sizing is large so make sure you go at least one size down (particularly if you’re smaller on top!)
The Mayacamas Maxi Dress is currently available for $198.
