what’s on: the scribe’s house

October 5, 2012 in entertainment

Anthropologie is proud to debut The Scribe’s House by Argentinean artist Pablo Lehmann. The installation — vestiges of an imaginary living space crafted from the pages of discarded books — explores the power of language and comprehension. It captures the tension between words, shape, meaning and space in a complex and intimate alternative world.

The space is filled with writing – walls, floor, furniture are covered with words – but devoid of a meta- language. The words on the pages of the books cannot be read or assembled into sentences, so the viewer is left to generate new meaning based on their personal experience.

Keith Johnson, Anthropologie’s curator-at-large, explains, “I was overwhelmed by his complex and complete alternative world. His use of found material gives the work a warmth and timelessness that is at once familiar and entirely new.”

A limited-edition art box created by Lehmann for Anthropologie presents another moment in time. It contains 12 photographs of The Scribe’s House’s rooms in perfect form. They are evidence of what was lost yet provide no answers. Instead they create a dialectical tension between installation and photography, before and after that the viewer is unable to resolve.

The Scribe’s House will be on view at Anthropologie at 50 Rockefeller Plaza from today until 7 November 2012. During Art Basel Miami, (6-9 December 2012), it will be on exhibit at Black Square Gallery.

If you have the chance to check it out, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

the queen’s jubilee = british sales!

May 31, 2012 in fashion

This weekend marks the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and to celebrate, many of my favourite British retailers are putting on some smashing deals. Here are a few I know about – if you know of any more, leave a comment!

Anthropologie: It’s not a British brand but shoppers using the EU site get the benefit of 30% off a selection of tea-party appropriate items until Tuesday. My pick is the Inkjet Halter Dress (now €126.40) or, if you can pull it off, the sunny Cascading Waves Dress (now €176.80).

ASOS: Our favourite British online retailer is offering 20% off selected brands until 9am Wednesday. There are so many items to choose from, including a range of British inspired items like Motel’s Union Jack Dress (right).

Dorothy Perkins: The cheap and cheerful high street store is offering up to 30% off everything. My favourite bargain is the Blue Butterfly Shift Dress (now £25.20)

Reiss: A favourite of the newest royal, Reiss is offering 10% off everything today only. Even better, the discount coincides with the addition of some new sale stock as well as the free shipping offer. I’ve already snapped up the gorgeous Rita Dress (now £95.40).

Whistles: Another of the Duchess’ picks is currently offering 20% off dresses. The Clara Lace Pleated Dress (now €185) would be perfect for high tea.

Keep calm and carry on? Not likely with these bargains! Happy shopping!

what’s on: anthropologie’s earth day activities

April 16, 2012 in fashion

As you might remember, I used to work for Tourism Queensland promoting Australia’s sunshine state and the Great Barrier Reef. Perhaps that’s why I’m so excited about the series of workshops Anthropologie is running for Earth Day this year.

The whimsical retailer has teamed up with the Wyland Foundation to promote the conservation and protection of coral reefs.

To capture attention and spark a public dialogue, the stores will unveil innovative window displays featuring three dimensional coral and ocean-life artwork created by Anthropologie’s talented teams of visual artists (see above). Each store will have a unique installation, only sharing in common the aquatic theme. Recycled materials such as paper, grocery bags and coffee filters were used along with wax and other common materials to create the uncommon displays.

Customers will also have an opportunity to show their support by bidding on the original displays made for the windows at many locations across the country. Silent auction winners will take home original artwork and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Wyland Foundation.

Leading up to Earth Day, customers and their children will also be invited to join special free of charge, kid-friendly watercolor workshops at 120 Anthropologie stores across the US and Canada. Find out more about the workshops and RSVP on the Anthropologie website.

Does your local Anthropologie store have its Earth Day display up? Are you taking part in the workshops? Tell us about it in the comments.

lusting for: inkjet halter dress

April 2, 2012 in fashion

Today was such a beautiful spring day here in Geneva that I went coat-free and bare-legged (though one of my colleagues did comment on the blinding pastiness of my skin. Note to self: review self-tanners.)

I’m already starting to plan for my summer holidays and the new arrivals in my favourite stores seem to be tempting me to plan for them sartorially as well.

One of the loveliest pieces I’ve seen is the Inkjet Halter Dress, which has just arrived at Anthropologie. The design from Dream Daily by Rozae Nichols combines a photo-print on the body, stripes of gorgeous summer colours on the skirt and a fabulous roped halter neck.

Looking at that product shot, I can practically feel the sand between my toes!

The Inkjet Halter Dress is available for $168 from Anthropologie.
