It’s Australia Day and what better way to celebrate than with an Aussie barbie – I know I’ll be getting together with some friends this afternoon for some snags, beers and the Hottest 100.

If you prefer your barbies less meaty and more doll-like, there’s also a special Australia Day edition for you.

Mattel is releasing the Sydney Opera House Barbie doll to celebrate our national day this year and she’s quite a stunner. With a gown designed by Alex Perry and inspired by Sydney’s famous building, she is the fourth in the Landmark Series.

The Sydney Opera House Barbie is available in Australia for $44. Read more at Grazia.

However you’re celebrating, I hope you have a wonderful Australia Day!

I’ve been looking at the Barbie poster in the window of Canturi in Queens Plaza for months thinking to myself “how much does it cost and who would buy it?”

Well, after last night’s auction at Christie’s New York, we still don’t know who bought it but we do know the selling price was $302,500. Admittedly, this was on the low side of the expected $300,000 – $500,000 range but it still claims the title of most expensive Barbie ever.

So what makes this doll so special? Jewelry designer Stefano Canturi designed her entire look, including a necklace in his signature Cubism style featuring a stunning one carat Australian Argyle pink diamond. Barbie also wears a matching Cubism ring.

While this may all seem a bit exorbitant for a doll, it’s for a good cause – 100% of the profits will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Read more on the Canturi website.
