best dressed at cannes 2012 opening ceremony

It’s that time of year when the south of France becomes extra glamorous – the Cannes Film Festival kicked off tonight.

There were some gorgeous gowns on the red carpet and here are a few of my favourites.

I always love Diane Kruger. Sartorially, I feel she can do no wrong, especially when she turns up in a gorgeously frothy concoction from Giambattista Valli. She’s a juror for the Palme d’Or so expect to see plenty more of her on the red carpet during the festival.

Freida Pinto took a bit more of a risk in her Michael Angel gown, but I think she pulls it off. She’s working multiple hot trends (sequins, peplum AND the thigh-high split) but I just wish she had chosen a less chunky pair of shoes.


Jane Fonda was spectacular in Atelier Versace. The 74-year old looked age appropriate, yet totally fabulous in her bronze gown. I just hope I look half as good at that age!

best dressed at the met costume institute gala 2012

After my all my complaining that this year’s red carpets had been too safe, we’ve been rewarded with a fashion forward one for a change. But what else would you expect for the Met’s Annual Costume Institute Gala.

This year’s event launched the new exhibit, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations. As expected, there were numerous Prada creations on the red carpet, and a few odes to Schiaparelli as well. Let’s break down the trends.

Surreal: Tributes to Schiaparelli drew on the designer’s love of the surreal. Emma Stone wore a short Lanvin number made of pink plastic, Elizabeth Banks (below) channeled her Hunger Games character Effie Trinket in Mary Katrantzou, Chloe Sevigny was strategically covered in Miu Miu and Beyonce was ready to fly away in feathered Givenchy Haute Couture.

Yellow: With all the Vougettes wearing pink, several stars on the red carpet opted for a sunnier take on the spring palette. Emma Roberts looked elegant in marigold Escada, January Jones was futuristic in neon Versace, Solange Knowles shone in sunshine Rachel Roy but Coco Rocha (below) stole the show in vintage Givenchy from the recent Elizabeth Taylor auction.

Gold: One of the biggest trends of the night was metallic. Karolina Kurkova looked incredible covered head to toe in gold Rachael Zoe, Jessica Alba was Grecian gorgeous in draped Michael Kors, Nina Dobrev looked ethereal in Donna Karan Atelier and host Carey Mulligan (below) was golden in Prada.

Carey Mulligan (above) gets my vote for best dressed, though I also liked the risk Christina Ricci took in her Thakoon frock. Who do you choose?

best dressed at the white house correspondents’ dinner

While the White House Correspondents’ Dinner should technically be for the staff and press of the White House, for some reason it always seems to end up overrun with celebrities. This has two distinct upsides – a more interesting selection of fashion… and more people that we actually recognise for Obama to roast in his hilarious speech (if you haven’t watch it yet, I strongly recommend you do – I was laughing out loud!)

Of all the dresses on the red carpet, I think Ginnifer Goodwin took the biggest risk. She looked fabulous in her off-the-rack H&M gown (which you can buy yourself for $299).

Zooey Deschanel also gets points for her pretty mauve Oscar de la Renta frock, Kate Hudson shone like the star she is in her purple sequined Jenny Packham gown, and Viola Davis looked old Hollywood glam in a one-shouldered, red Amsale.

But how could anyone look past the First Lady? Michelle Obama looked positively radiant in her colourful Naeem Khan gown and in my book, nobody else came close.

best dressed at the 2012 oscars

Film’s night of nights is over and while the show is being touted as “the most boring ever”, I’m happy that the fashion was less than dull. Time to review the trends!

White: I love the look of a white gown on the red carpet and apparently the stylists agree with me because this was the biggest trend last night. Some of my particular favourites included Milla Jovovich in sparkling Elie Saab, Gwyneth Paltrow in sleek Tom Ford (with a cape!), Shailene Woodley in vintage-inspired Valentino and best supporting actress Octavia Spencer in glamourous Tadashi Shoji.

Red: It wasn’t a big trend but three of my favourite red carpet stars were wearing it – Emma Stone‘s Giambattista Valli gown was gorgeous with a giant neck bow, while Natalie Portman was sweet and classic in a vintage Christian Dior haute couture gown from 1954 and Michelle Williams looked elegant in her peplum-detailed Louis Vuitton.

Gold: At the risk of being confused with the coveted statuette, some leading ladies opted for draped gold this year. Best Actress Meryl Streep wore hers by Lanvin, Clooney’s squeeze Stacy Keibler opted for Marchesa and my favourite diva, Miss Piggy, went for Zac Posen.

Best of the rest: Glenn Close looked amazing in petrol Zac Posen, Viola Davis rocked her natural hair as well as her jewel green Vera Wang gown, Berenice Bejo was ladylike in mint Elie Saab, Jessica Chastain looked a true Hollywood star in black and gold Alexander McQueen and, of course, Angelina Jolie (and her leg) stole the show in black velvet Versace.

Runners-up for me were last year’s best dressed Natalie Portman in her vintage Dior and fresh face Jessica Chastain in her fabulous McQueen. However it was Ms Paltrow who made my jaw drop – her look is so simple but so stunning. And did I mention she wore a cape? What’s not to love!

best dressed at the 2012 grammys and baftas

Let’s take a break from the film awards for a moment and head on over to the biggest night in music, the Grammy Awards.

I must say the red carpet was even less exciting than those at other awards shows, and I was particularly disappointed because I love a bit of crazy Grammys dress action.

There were, of course, a couple of out-there outfits. Nicki Minaj wore a crazy red Versace cape (and came with a Pope-costumed partner) and Lady Gaga was covered in black netting, also by Versace.

Otherwise, the theme of the evening was black. Golden girl of the evening Adele wore hers by Giorgio Armani, Alicia Keys went for the classic LBD by Alexandre Vauthier, Gwyneth Paltrow opted for cutout Stella McCartney and Rihanna wore a plunging Giorgio Armani.

Nobody really had the “wow” factor for me so is it ok if I give my best dressed to somebody from the other awards night on this side of the Atlantic?

To quickly divert back to film, the BAFTAs were also on last night – and I loved Michelle Williams‘ black and white dress by (wait for it…) H&M! Also stunning were Jessica Chastain in Oscar de la Renta, Viola Davis in eco-friendly Valentino (her hot pink dress was made from recycled bottles!) and finally, Miss Piggy looked every bit the diva in Louis Vuitton.
