in the news: all the world’s a stage

July 5, 2010 in news, theatre

I stumbled across two interesting developments in the world of theatre over the weekend.

The first is that a musical version of Bridget Jones’ Diary is in the works. Author Helen Fielding, director Stephen Daldry and pop star Lily Allen are all collaborating on a musical version that they hope to stage in London’s West End early next year. Behind it all is the same production team responsible for the critically acclaimed screen-to-stage musical Billy Elliot. Rumour is actress Sheridan Smith recently read for Bridget’s role but no word yet on who will step into Hugh Grant and Colin Firth’s shoes to play the men in her life.

In other news, Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and Giorgio Armani are among the numerous designers working on the costumes for a new pantomime appropriately named Snow White and the Seven Designers. According to instyle.com, the story will be based on the familiar story but the seven dwarves will be replaced with seven designers (as the name suggests). Together they fight a battle against London’s biggest plight – ugly interiors. The show will be held at the Garrick Theatre, London from 12-16 October, with all proceeds raised donated to Dementia UK.

July 1, 2010 in news

1. John Paul Gaultier has teamed up with La Perla to design a high end lingerie collection comprising 27 styles, most of which will be handmade. Gaultier is more famous for using underwear as outwear (such as Madonna’s famous conical bra) but his corsets, bras and briefs will no doubt be just as popular. The collection will be in stores from November, with prices starting at £405. See vogue.co.uk for more.

2. Diane von Furstenberg has asked the Radio City Rockettes to perform at the Life Ball 2010 in Vienna on 17 July (the opening event for the International AIDS Conference). The legendary dancers will wear DVF wrap rompers from her cruise collection (right) for a choreographed fashion segment. “There is nothing more New York than the Radio City Rockettes,” von Furstenberg said. “We are pleased to bring those legs, those kicks and those glamorous women with us to Vienna.” See wwd.com for more.

3. It seems Sex and the City 2 was the last we’ll see of the fab four. Apparently any possibility of a third movie was canned after the shocking reviews and negativity surrounding the recent release. Read more at dropdeadgorgeous.com.
