(almost) at the movies: a dangerous method

June 27, 2011 in movies

I tend to enjoy dramas with an historical element and given I did a minor in psychology during my undergrad, I’m particularly looking forward to A Dangerous Method.

The upcoming film stars Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung, Viggo Mortensen as his mentor, Sigmund Freud, and Keira Knightley as patient Sabina Spielrein. The film charts the birth of psychoanalysis on the eve of World War 1 in Germany but even if you’re not partiuclarly interested in psychology, it looks like it could be quite an intense drama.

Release dates are still sketchy but the film is planned to be on the big screen in the UK at least on 12 February 2012.

at the movies: never let me go

April 12, 2011 in movies

Every so often, a film comes out with such diverse release dates around the world that it’s on DVD in some countries before it’s on the big screen in others. Never Let Me Go falls into this category – so apologies to my American and British readers for the delayed review!

Adapted from the novel of the same name, Never Let Me Go boats a stellar British cast including Oscar nominees Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley.

Set in an alternative reality, Kathy H. (Mulligan), Ruth (Knightley) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield) all attended the same private boarding school as children. They become caught in a love triangle, while at the same time trying to deal with their destiny. (I don’t want to ruin it for you so if you want to know what their destiny is, go see it!)

I haven’t read the book but I would like to now that I have seen the film. It’s such a touching and emotive story that I think it would be even more compelling in written form. That being said, I thought the film was very well made and while it would probably technically fall into the genre of science fiction, I view it more as a love story. Don’t forget your tissues!

Never Let Me Go is currently in cinemas in Australia and on DVD in the US.

Rating: ***1/2

friday film: chanel’s coco mademoiselle

April 8, 2011 in fashion

I’ll admit I’m a little behind the times with today’s Friday film – but even though the new Coco Mademoiselle film was released a couple of weeks ago, it’s fabulously shot and worthy of a spot here on The Dernier Cri.

We checked out the teasers early last month but now we’ve got the full film starring Keira Knightley.

What do you think? Does it make you want to get your Mademoiselle on or did you prefer Natalie Portman’s turn for Dior?

battle of the perfume misses

March 7, 2011 in fashion

Dior and Chanel are two of the most well-known and famous French couture houses. Both also make a significant portion of their profit on perfume sales (because, let’s face it, that’s pretty much all most of us can afford to buy!)

It makes sense then that both brands would attempt to lure in the “mademoiselle market” by each marketing a perfume specifically at the demographic.

One brand ambassador is an Oscar winner, the other has been Oscar nominated. Both portray an air of confidence and effortless beauty. One was even the other’s decoy in The Phantom Menace (true story!)

Natalie Portman’s Miss Dior Cherie ad has been on television here for a couple of weeks and I’m quite a fan. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check it out below.

Keira Knightley’s Coco Mademoiselle ad campaign will launch on 1 April but pictured is a sneak peak (head over to Elle Espana for more photos).

Both campaigns are classy and a little cheeky but here’s the million dollar question – which perfume would you choose based on the ads?
