2014 in review: music

It’s that time of year again! I can’t believe 2014 is already coming to an end. It’s been such an eventful and exciting year (as evidenced by the significant lack of posts on here – my apologies!) and I love that music can play such a great role in helping to remember all those amazing moments.

Daniel Kim from Pop Danthology has done it again this year with an amazing mash-up of all the hits of 2014. I’m glad to see Happy makes it back in this year, because the Pharrell concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival in July was one of my musical highlights of the year. I’m also excited to see that Let It Go from Frozen makes an appearance right at the end because that song must have been stuck in my head for about six months! Did your favourite song of 2014 get a mention?

best of 2012: music

With the official Gangnam Style YouTube clip hitting 1 billion views just an hour or so ago, it seems a great time to discuss the best songs of the year.

Of course, the K-Pop hit has to be up there, along with Carly Rae Jepson’s Call Me Maybe. For me, Fun.’s We Are Young reminds me of my great summer holiday with friends and, living in Europe, I’ve come to appreciate club mixes more than I care to appreciate.

Check out a spectacular mash-up of the year’s hottest songs below and then let me know – what’s your song of the year?

friday film: all i want for christmas is you

It’s time to get festive! It’s less than two weeks until Christmas and as I type, the snow is falling outside my window in big, fluffy flakes. If your weather is a little less conducive to a festive mood, the below clip ought to get you feeling merry and bright quick smart!

Jimmy Fallon grabbed The Roots, Mariah Carey, a few school kids and some toy instruments to put together a rousing, back-stage rendition of “All I Want For Christmas Is You”. It’s so much fun that you can help but feel happy!

2012 has been a huge year (hands up if you also started a new job and went back to school!) and from next week, I’ll be wrapping it up with The Dernier Cri’s traditional “best of” series. Make sure you check it out!

kylie minogue and dolce & gabbana want you!

Australian songbird Kylie Minogue has teamed up with Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana for a fabulous competition.

Entries are being sought for a t-shirt design inspired by Kylie’s Aphrodite – Les Folies tour and in particular her tour wardrobe designed by Dolce & Gabbana. The selected design will be signed by Kylie and then worn by her in an official photographic shoot. The signed t-shirt will be given to the winning designer after the photoshoot.

Kylie Minogue, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana will select the winning design themselves so it’s a fantastic opportunity to get your design in front of some big names.

Submission close 11 May so you’ve only got a couple of days left to get your entry in! Read more info at Talenthouse.

in the news: daft punk does coke

I know your first thought when you read the title was probably a little more illicit than the truth – Daft Punk has teamed up with Coca-Cola for the 2011 edition of Coke Club.

Last year, we saw Karl Lagerfeld’s stylish take on the contour bottle and Daft Punk’s version is also quite elegant, if a little plain.

The silver and gold aluminum bottles are inspired by the band’s helmets and come in a club-appropriate collector box (see photo). The set will be available from Monday at Colette for €52.

Coca-Cola has also announced that an exclusive item that will be unveiled during May on daftcoke.com, with an online contest organised to win this object – if you’re a fan of the band, I’d keep an eye on the site!

P.S. Happy St Patrick’s Day to our Irish (and a wee bit Irish) readers!
