the anthropologist goes fishing

January 4, 2011 in fashion

Now that we’re back to work after the holidays and into the new year, I think we all deserve a bit of a distracting treat.

Anthropologie’s blog, The Anthropologist, has commissioned an amazing series of photographs for its January feature, continuing its mission of championing emerging and established artists across various disciplines.

Shawn Davis is a fly tying artist (as in fly fishing) as well as a self-taught goldsmith. He has turned the humble fishing fly into art so beautiful that even those of us who detest fishing are drawn in by his creations.

The fly Davis created for The Anthropologist’s photo series was inspired by Rumpelstiltskin. The artist spun together 100 strands of various materials including 18K gold strands that were finer than human hair, flax, and ostrich herl to create a fly that was also a beautiful pendant.

The photographs document the approximately 100 hour process Davis undertook to create this intricate and amazing piece of art. It’s too beautiful to use for fishing in its traditional sense but it certainly works to lure me in.

You can view the full photographic series at The Anthropologist.

gift idea #18: the linguist

In my early 20s, I studied in Paris and I’ve been struggling to hold onto my French ever since. I have a few friends in a similar situation so I started thinking about presents that could help us out.

I’m sure you’ve seen those magnetic poetry kits with a whole lot of random words that you can use to create silly sentences. Well, apparently they also make kits in different languages.

You get over 500 words and word fragments that can be used to create all sorts of crazy sentences to help keep a second language top of mind while having fun at the same time. There are heaps of languages to choose from including Spanish, Yiddish, Sign Language and, of course, French (pictured).

You can buy kits online from Magnetic Poetry for $19.95. If you’re in Brisbane, I’ve also seen them at Mind Games in the Myer Centre.

your monday procrastination tools

July 19, 2010 in entertainment

It’s the first day of the working week and Mondayitis has struck hard again. Fortunately, I’m not at work this afternoon. Unfortunately, it’s because the boy crashed his bike yesterday and is now nursing a broken clavicle and a very impressive collection of bruises, gashes and grazes.

While he’s taking a nap, I’ve found a couple of fun ways to procrastinate for the rest of the afternoon which are equally appropriate for time-wasting at work.

The first has been around for a while but I still love it – Mad Men Yourself has been revamped for Season 4 offering new clothes, accessories and backgrounds. My Mad Men self is hanging out with Don Draper (right) but you can choose from a variety of scenes. Thank you AMC for your endless support of stylish procrastination.

The other new time-waster I’ve stumbled across is I Write Like, a text analyser that will tell you which famous writer your own writing most resembles. Based on Friday’s post, I apparently most resemble Stephen King. Who knew?

Have fun and happy Monday!
