in the news: weekend wedding round-up

July 4, 2011 in fashion, news

It was certainly a big weekend for big weddings. On Friday, Prince Albert of Monaco married South African Charlene Wittstock in a civil ceremony followed by a religious ceremony on the Saturday. (Monaco, like France, has a clear separation of church and state so religious wedding ceremonies are purely symbolic, while the legal marriage takes place at the town hall).

While I was quite a fan of Her Serene Highness’ blue suit designed by Karl Lagerfeld for the civil ceremony, I thought she looked amazing in her Giorgio Armani silk gown covered in 40,000 Swarovski crystals for the religious ceremony (right). The design on the front of the dress reminds me a little of another royal wedding dress, don’t you think? She also changed into another Armani gown for the reception.

Fashion royalty also had its own wedding on Friday, with Kate Moss marrying long time boyfriend Jamie Hince in the Cottswalds. Kate chose a gorgeous gown by her friend (and current fashion exile) John Galliano (above). The dress itself was inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald – which makes sense given Moss is also wearing Zelda’s engagement ring.

Apparently the bride had three outfit changes for the reception, all designed by Stella McCartney. Her first dance dress was an oyster silk chiffon dress with a diamond-shape, chain embroidered bodice and cut-out back, her party dress was a mini with micro bugle beads and a plunging back, and her going-away outfit was an alabaster off-white wool three-piece suit with a single-breasted, grosgrain peak lapel jacket and a wide-leg trouser.

What do you think of the weekend brides?

in the news: mcqueen at the institute

November 11, 2010 in fashion

The Valentino Retrospective may be drawing to a close at GoMA in Brisbane this weekend but today we’ve heard news of another great designer retrospective.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty will open at the Costume Institute Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on 4 May 2011 and run until 31 July 2011. The exhibit will feature approximately 100 McQueen creations from his London archive and personal collections as well as his designs for Givenchy, where he worked in the late 1990s.

The retrospective launches two days after the Costume Institute Gala, which will also have a McQueen theme. Honorary Chairs of the gala will be François-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek, while Co-Chairs will be Colin Firth, Stella McCartney and Anna Wintour. With leadership like this, we can expect the gala to be a super-stylish event befitting its honouree.

Sounds to me like it’s time to start planning a spring visit to New York, New York…

in the news: stella for target launches

October 29, 2010 in fashion, news

Well, ladies – it’s here! The new Stella McCartney for Target range launched today and down at the Brisbane CBD store, it was the usual madness one expects from a limited edition diffusion line release.

I tried on several pieces from the collection but ended up taking home only one piece – the off-white ribbon tie dress ($149 – photo right). I actually didn’t pay this one much attention when I was looking online but when I saw it in person, it was too gorgeous not to buy!

I’ve also got my eye on the off-white tulip shaped trench but at $249, I just can’t quite justify it right now. I’ll consider further over the weekend because unlike many of the other pieces, there are plenty of trenches left in store.

I found the fit across the range to be true to size (my usual Australian size 8 fit me right) but many of the styles were far too hippy for my slightly straighter shape. I had no joy with the pants or skirts, though the dresses and tops fit nicely.

Many stores received a second drop of clothes at lunchtime today and apparently there will be another before stores open tomorrow so if you’re lusting for a piece that was sold out today, don’t give up!

in the news: stella on target again

October 4, 2010 in fashion

Back when I was an undergrad at university, Stella McCartney collaborated with Target Australia for the store’s first ever designer range. There was mass hysteria, queues outside stores for hours before opening and generally un-ladylike behaviour as Australian women fought for their own cut-price piece of designer fashion (and then proceeded to sell it on eBay for considerably more than the retail price!)

Being the young but broke fashionista I was, I remember being super excited at the prospect. I wandered into my local Target after my morning classes on launch day to find all the pieces I’d coveted had already sold out.

But it seems I’ll get a second chance – Target has announced that our favourite vegan fashion goddess will be launching her second collection for the store on 29 October.

All pieces will retail for under $299 and there are decidedly more work/party pieces this time around than the rather casual collection we got last time.

Personally I’m loving the Tulip Shaped Trench in off white or black ($249 – see photo), the Tulip Dress with tie in ivory ($199) and the heavy lace embroidered strapless dress in nude ($229).

Check out the clothing and accessories collections on the Designers for Target website and don’t forget to mark your calendar for 29 October!

in the news: stella gets olympic spirit

July 14, 2010 in fashion, news

Apparently Adidas will today announce that Stella McCartney has been selected to be creative director for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games British athletes’ uniforms. Adidas is the games’ official sportswear partner and McCartney has existing ties with the company through her Adidas by Stella McCartney line of women’s athletic clothing.

According to wwd.com, an Adidas spokeswoman said the new partnership between McCartney and the brand would run from now until the 2012 Olympics, and would feature four separate collections. First up will be a men’s and women’s lifestyle collection “inspired by Team GB” aimed at non-athletes and fans released in September through Adidas stores in the UK.

I’m a big fan of Stella’s athletic designs – including her outfits for tennis player Caroline Wozniacki – so I’m looking forward to seeing what she does for the motherland.
